Reproduction is the biological process by which living things produce new individuals of the same species. All living things reproduce - animals, plants, and even tiny bacteria. Without reproduction, species would die out. The new individuals produced are called offspring.

When organisms reproduce, their offspring look similar to them. Kittens look like cats, not dogs. Oak seeds grow into oak trees, not apple trees. This happens because parents pass on information to their offspring that controls how they develop and what characteristics they have.

It controls things like body shape, eye colour, height, and many other characteristics. This is why children look like their parents!

Some organisms reproduce with only one parent. This is called asexual reproduction. Bacteria do this by splitting in two. Some plants do this when they grow new plants from runners or bulbs. In asexual reproduction, offspring are identical to their parent.
Look at any family and you'll see resemblances. The royal family shows this clearly - Prince William and Prince Harry both inherited features from their parents. Children often hear "You've got your mum's eyes" or "You look just like your dad when he was young." These family resemblances happen because characteristics are passed from parents to children.
The UK has hundreds of dog breeds, all developed by breeding dogs with desired characteristics. Border Collies (from the Scottish Borders) are bred to be intelligent herding dogs. Labrador Retrievers were bred to retrieve game. Puppies inherit their parents' characteristics - that's why a Labrador puppy grows up to be a Labrador, with the same body shape and temperament as its parents.
Strawberry plants reproduce asexually by sending out runners - long stems that grow along the ground and produce new plants. These new plants are genetically identical to the parent plant. This is why British strawberry farmers can grow fields of identical plants with the same taste and size of fruit. One parent = identical offspring.
The Rare Breeds Survival Trust in the UK works to preserve traditional British farm breeds like Gloucester Old Spot pigs and Lincoln Longwool sheep. These breeds have been maintained for centuries because offspring inherit their parents' characteristics. Without reproduction, these unique breeds would be lost forever.
