Fossils show us the shape, size, and structure of organisms that lived millions of years ago. From a fossil skeleton, scientists can work out how big an animal was, whether it walked on two legs or four, and what its teeth were like. This tells us if it was a plant-eater or a meat-eater!

Different fossils are found in different rock layers. Older rock layers (deeper down) contain different fossils than newer layers (near the surface). By studying which layer a fossil is found in, scientists can work out when an organism lived. This helps us understand the timeline of life on Earth.

Fossils tell us about past environments. Finding coral fossils in a desert tells us the area was once a warm sea. Finding tropical plant fossils in Britain tells us it was once much warmer here. The types of fossils in a place reveal what the climate and landscape used to be like.

The fossil record shows that life on Earth has changed dramatically over billions of years. Simple organisms appeared first, followed by more complex ones. Many species have become extinct, while others evolved into new forms. This is evidence for evolution - the gradual change in living things over time.
Tyrannosaurus rex fossils tell us this dinosaur was a fierce meat-eater. Its teeth were up to 30 cm long, curved backwards, and serrated like steak knives - perfect for gripping and tearing flesh. Its powerful jaw could crush bone. Fossil coprolites (dino droppings) containing crushed bone fragments confirm T. rex ate other dinosaurs whole!
Fossils of crocodiles, palm trees, and tropical turtles have been found in the London Clay (about 50 million years old). These fossils tell us Britain once had a climate like today's Southeast Asia - hot and humid with tropical rainforests! The Earth's climate has changed dramatically over millions of years.
In Scotland, dinosaur footprints found on the Isle of Skye tell us about dinosaur behaviour 170 million years ago. The tracks show different dinosaurs walking together, suggesting they may have lived in groups. The depth of the prints tells us how heavy they were, and the spacing shows how fast they were moving. Some even show where dinosaurs slipped in the mud!
Fossils show how horses changed over 55 million years. Early horse ancestors (like Eohippus) were small, about the size of a dog, with multiple toes. Fossils from different time periods show gradual changes: horses got larger, their teeth changed for grazing grass, and they evolved from having four toes to just one (the hoof). This is one of the best fossil records showing evolution.

Wrong thinking: "Scientists know exactly what colour dinosaurs were and exactly how they behaved." Correct: Fossils give us clues, but we can't know everything. Scientists make educated interpretations based on evidence, but some details (like exact colours and sounds) are often impossible to know for certain. New discoveries can change our understanding!
Wrong thinking: "Finding a fossil is like finding a photograph of the animal." Correct: Most fossils are incomplete - usually just bones, teeth, or shells. Soft parts like skin, muscles, and organs almost never fossilise. Scientists have to reconstruct what the whole animal looked like, which requires careful study and sometimes guesswork.
Wrong thinking: "Fossils can tell us everything about an extinct animal." Correct: Fossils CAN tell us about body structure, diet (from teeth), and movement (from bones and footprints). Fossils usually CAN'T tell us about behaviour, sounds, or soft body parts. We can only interpret what the evidence shows us.
Wrong thinking: "Britain has always had the same climate." Correct: Fossils show that environments change dramatically over millions of years. Britain was once under tropical seas, then covered in rainforests, then frozen under glaciers. The fossils found in a place tell us about PAST environments, not present ones.
