Understanding voltage helps explain why different devices use different numbers of batteries. A powerful torch needs more voltage (more cells) to produce a brighter light. Your TV remote only needs a few volts because it uses very little power. Matching the right voltage to the right device is essential—too little and it won't work; too much and you could damage it!
A typical TV remote uses two 1.5V cells in series, giving a total of 3V. This low voltage is safe and provides enough power for the infrared LED to send signals to your TV. If you put the cells in the wrong way (both positives facing the same direction), the remote won't work because the voltages cancel out instead of adding together.
Electric cars like the Nissan Leaf (built in Sunderland, UK) use battery packs with hundreds of cells connected together. This gives them around 360 volts—enough to power a motor strong enough to drive the car at motorway speeds! The UK is now one of the leading countries for electric vehicle manufacturing.
In a classroom experiment, you might connect 1, 2, 3, or 4 cells to a bulb and measure how bright it gets. With one 1.5V cell, the bulb glows dimly. With two cells (3V), it's brighter. With three cells (4.5V), it's very bright. But with four cells (6V), the bulb might be so bright it burns out! This shows that voltage directly affects brightness.
In 1800, Italian scientist Alessandro Volta invented the first true battery—the "voltaic pile." He stacked alternating discs of zinc and copper, separated by cardboard soaked in saltwater. Each pair of metals produced about 1 volt, and stacking more pairs increased the total voltage. This invention was so important that we named the unit of voltage after him!
