Circuit symbols are a universal language that scientists and engineers use to represent electrical components. Instead of drawing realistic pictures of batteries and bulbs, we use simple symbols that everyone around the world understands.

You need to recognise these symbols: cell (one long, one short line), battery (multiple cells), lamp/bulb (circle with X), switch (open) (gap in line), switch (closed) (line connected), wire (straight line), motor (M in circle), and buzzer (half-circle).

A circuit diagram uses symbols connected by straight lines (wires) to show how components are connected. Always draw diagrams as neat rectangles with components along the sides. The diagram should show a complete loop for the circuit to work.

You should be able to look at a circuit diagram and build the real circuit, or look at a real circuit and draw its diagram. This skill is essential for planning experiments and communicating with other scientists.

A torch circuit contains: a cell (or battery), a lamp, a switch, and wires. The circuit diagram shows these connected in a rectangle. When the switch is closed, current flows from the cell, through the lamp (lighting it up), and back to the cell. You can draw this with just 4 symbols!
When electricians wire British homes, they use detailed circuit diagrams. These show exactly where each socket, switch, and light fitting should go. Without standardised symbols, every electrician would draw things differently, leading to dangerous confusion. British Standard BS 3939 defines the symbols used.

Wrong: Drawing the battery symbol for a single cell. Right: A cell has one long line (+) and one short line (−). A battery shows two or more cells joined together. Remember: the LONGER line is always the POSITIVE terminal.
Wrong: Drawing wobbly lines that cross over randomly. Right: Always use straight lines (horizontal and vertical only) with neat right-angle corners. Your circuit should look like a rectangle with components along its sides. Use a ruler!
Wrong: Drawing components but not connecting them all in a loop. Right: Every circuit diagram must show a complete loop from the positive terminal of the cell, through all components, and back to the negative terminal. No gaps allowed (unless showing an open switch)!
Wrong: Drawing an open switch as just a gap in the wire. Right: An open switch shows a small arm that could close to complete the circuit. A closed switch shows the arm down, completing the wire. Both versions should be clearly recognisable.
