Follow the pathway whenever you need to capture a piece of apparatus, a specimen, or a process.
Identify what the diagram must show: the arrangement of equipment, the structure of an organism, or how a process works. Choose the clearest viewpoint (top, side, cross-section) and lightly sketch the overall shape in pencil.
Check: Does your chosen angle make every important feature visible?
Use simple, continuous lines. Keep proportions realistic or add a scale bar if size matters. Plan space so labels can sit neatly on one or two sides without squeezing.
Check: Do the relative sizes match what you observed or measured?
Use a ruler to draw label lines that do not cross. Print labels horizontally and add short annotations to describe functions (e.g., �Valve opens to release pressure�). Use arrows to show movement or direction where needed.
Check: Could someone copy your diagram to repeat the investigation exactly?
Add a title, date, and magnification if relevant. Proofread spellings and ensure the diagram is centred with enough white space. Compare with the real object or equipment list to confirm nothing is missing.
Check: Would this diagram work as evidence if your written description was lost?
A scientific diagram is a precise record of what you saw or how equipment was set up. It must be accurate, labelled, and easy to reproduce. Fancy shading, cartoon faces, or decorative borders distract from the information and make the diagram harder to scan.
Biological drawings (cells, leaves, insects) require accurate shapes and often a scale bar. Apparatus diagrams show the order and connections between equipment; use plan or side views depending on what needs to be seen. Process diagrams (water cycle, filtration stages) emphasise arrows and sequencing so that someone can follow each stage.
Diagrams are evidence. They show examiners, teachers, and future scientists exactly what you observed. Accurate drawings help spot differences between species, allow other teams to set up equipment safely, and make your conclusions believable. Professional scientists submit diagrams with research papers, so building these habits now prepares you for GCSE and beyond.
After collecting a glossy laurel leaf, outline the leaf shape, midrib, lateral veins, and petiole. Label the waxy cuticle and note that it �reduces water loss�. Add a 3 cm scale bar so the reader knows how large it was.
When viewing onion epidermis under �100 magnification, lightly sketch five cells. Label cell wall, nucleus, and cytoplasm. Add an annotation like �Cells form a protective sheet only one cell thick�. Include �Magnification �100�.
Draw a tripod, funnel with filter paper, conical flask, and residue left on the paper. Label each component and draw an arrow showing the direction the filtrate travels. Mention that the filter paper was folded into a cone.
During a pond ecosystem study, make a plan view showing quadrats, reed beds, sampling points, and compass directions. Label water depth measurements and note �Samples collected along 5 m transect�. This helps others repeat the sampling pattern.
