Using the right equipment is essential for accurate results. A kitchen scale can't measure a grain of sand accurately, and a ruler isn't suitable for measuring 5km! Choosing appropriate equipment means selecting tools that give you the precision and range you need for your investigation.
Check: Why would you use a measuring cylinder instead of a beaker to measure exactly 50ml?
Different measurements need different tools: Rulers/metre sticks for length, Measuring cylinders for liquid volume, Balances/scales for mass, Thermometers for temperature, Stopwatches for time, Force meters for force (newtons).

Even the best equipment gives wrong results if used incorrectly. Always: check it's zeroed or calibrated, read at eye level (avoid parallax), use a flat surface, handle carefully. Know the units your equipment uses (some thermometers show °C and °F!).

Scientific equipment must be used safely: handle glass carefully, never run with equipment, report breakages immediately, keep liquids away from electronic equipment. After use, clean equipment and store it properly for next time.

Professional scientists spend thousands of pounds on precise equipment because accuracy matters. In hospitals, life-saving medicine doses must be measured exactly. In construction, tiny measurement errors can cause buildings to fail. Learning to select and use equipment correctly now prepares you for science at secondary school and beyond!

Why these choices? Measuring cylinders are more precise than beakers. Electronic balances give exact masses. These choices ensure your results are reliable.
Steps for accurate measurement:
Common error: Reading from above gives a value that's too high. Reading from below gives a value that's too low.
Problem: You need to measure exactly 25g of sand, but you need to put it in a container.
Solution using tare:
Without taring, you'd need to calculate: 47g + 25g = 72g, which increases the chance of error!
Measuring length:
Why? A 30cm ruler would be inaccurate for measuring 50m (too many measurements, adding up errors). A trundle wheel would be too imprecise for a paperclip. Match the tool to the task!

Beakers are for mixing and holding liquids, not precise measuring. Their scale markings are only approximate. Use measuring cylinders for accurate volumes.
✗ Wrong: Put the container on, add the substance, hope for the best.
✓ Right: Put the container on, press TARE/ZERO to reset to 0g, THEN add your substance.
If you don't tare, you'll include the container's mass in your measurement - giving wrong results!
✗ Wrong: Lining up the object with the end of the ruler (which might not be at 0).
✓ Right: Lining up the object with the 0 mark on the ruler.
Many rulers have a small gap before the 0 mark. Starting from the edge adds that gap to every measurement!
✗ Wrong: Trying to measure 500ml in a 100ml measuring cylinder (filling it 5 times).
✓ Right: Using a 500ml measuring cylinder, or a 1L jug with ml markings.
Multiple measurements add up errors. Choose equipment with an appropriate range for what you're measuring.
