A series circuit has components connected in one single loop - there's only ONE path for electricity to flow. A parallel circuit has components connected in branches - there are MULTIPLE paths for electricity.

All UK homes use parallel circuits for lights and sockets. This means you can turn off one light while others stay on, and if a bulb blows in the kitchen, the living room lights still work. Each circuit gets the full 230V from the mains. This also means each appliance can be controlled independently with its own switch.
Old-fashioned Christmas lights were wired in series. If one bulb blew, you had to check every bulb to find the broken one! Modern Christmas lights use parallel wiring, so if one bulb fails, the rest stay lit. Some use a clever combination where small groups are in series, but the groups are in parallel.
Build two circuits: one series (battery → bulb → bulb → back to battery) and one parallel (battery → two separate branches, each with a bulb). Compare brightness. Then unscrew one bulb in each circuit. In series, both go out. In parallel, one stays lit. This shows why parallel is better for many uses.
The batteries in a torch are usually connected in series - this adds their voltages together. Two 1.5V batteries in series give 3V, making the bulb brighter. However, you could connect batteries in parallel to make them last longer (same voltage but more capacity). Different arrangements for different needs!

While components in series are connected one after another, the key feature is there's only ONE PATH for current. If you can trace your finger from the battery through ALL components and back without lifting it or choosing a direction, it's series.
Components don't have to be physically next to each other to be in parallel. The key is they have SEPARATE PATHS from the power source. If current has a choice of which way to go, and components are in different branches, they're in parallel.
In series: voltage is SHARED (divided), current is the SAME everywhere. In parallel: voltage is the SAME in each branch, current is SHARED (splits up). Many students get these backwards. Remember: in series, bulbs share voltage so they're dimmer.
While it's true that adding more branches in parallel drains a battery faster, each individual component works at full brightness/power. In series, adding components makes each one dimmer. Parallel isn't "wasteful" - it's just giving full power to each branch.
