When you add more cells in series, the voltage increases. This increased "push" makes more current flow, which makes bulbs brighter, buzzers louder, and motors spin faster.

Components have maximum ratings. A bulb rated for 3V will work well at 3V, glow brightly at 4.5V, but might blow (burn out) at 6V. Too much current overheats the filament. Always check voltage ratings!

The brightness of a bulb, the loudness of a buzzer, and the speed of a motor all depend on how much current flows through them. More current = more effect. And what controls how much current flows? Voltage!
When you add more cells in series to a circuit:

This relationship explains why devices use different numbers of batteries. A TV remote needs little power (2 cells), while a powerful torch needs more (4+ cells). Understanding this helps you choose the right batteries and avoid damaging equipment.
A TV remote control typically uses 2 AAA cells (3V) because it only needs to power a small infrared LED that flashes briefly. A powerful LED torch, like those used by British mountain rescue teams, might use 4 or more cells (6V+) to produce an extremely bright beam visible from far away. The torch needs more voltage to push more current through its high-power LED.
In a Year 6 science lesson, students connected 1, 2, and 3 cells to the same bulb. With 1 cell (1.5V), the bulb glowed dimly. With 2 cells (3V), it was noticeably brighter. With 3 cells (4.5V), it was very bright - but when they tried 4 cells (6V), the bulb's filament burned out! This showed both the relationship and the importance of not exceeding voltage ratings.
Traditional British doorbells often use a buzzer powered by cells. A doorbell with 2 cells produces a moderate sound suitable for a small flat. But a doorbell for a large Victorian house might need 4 cells to produce a louder buzz that can be heard throughout the building. The higher voltage creates more current, making the buzzer's vibrations stronger and louder.
Model railway enthusiasts in the UK often use variable voltage to control train speed. At low voltage (around 3V), the motor turns slowly and the train crawls along. Increase to 6V and it moves at medium speed. At 12V, the train races around the track! This principle - varying voltage to control motor speed - is also used in electric cars and industrial machines.

Some students think adding more cells is always a good idea. Wrong! Components have voltage ratings. A 3V bulb will work well at 3V but will burn out at 6V. More voltage isn't always better - it's about matching the voltage to what the component needs.
Students sometimes think a brighter bulb means it's working "harder" in a good way. Actually, a very bright bulb is also getting very hot because more current is flowing. This extra heat can damage the bulb. Brightness shows current flow, but there's always a safe limit.
Some assume double the cells = exactly double the brightness. The relationship is real, but not perfectly proportional. With twice the voltage, the current increases, making the bulb noticeably brighter - but perceived brightness doesn't double perfectly. Real experiments show it's more complex!
A bright bulb (using high voltage) will drain cells much faster than a dim bulb. Students often don't realise that the same cells powering a bright torch will run out quicker than when powering a dim one. More current means more energy used per second!
