In 1831, aged just 22, he sailed around the world on HMS Beagle, collecting specimens and making observations. Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) was another British naturalist who independently came up with the same idea as Darwin! While exploring Malaysia and Indonesia, he noticed similar patterns of variation and natural selection. In 1858, he wrote to Darwin describing his ideas - Darwin was amazed that Wallace had reached the same conclusions!

When Wallace sent his letter, Darwin had already been working on his theory for 20 years but hadn't published it! Rather than competing, they presented their ideas together at a scientific meeting in 1858. The next year, Darwin published his famous book "On the Origin of Species." Both scientists are credited with discovering natural selection.

In 1831, he joined the HMS Beagle as a naturalist on a five-year voyage around the world. During this trip, he collected thousands of specimens and made detailed observations that would change science forever.
Darwin's visit to the Galápagos Islands (off the coast of South America) was crucial. He noticed that:

Wallace was born in Usk, Wales. Unlike Darwin (who came from a wealthy family), Wallace had to work hard to fund his expeditions. He spent years exploring the Amazon and then Malaysia and Indonesia. While suffering from fever in Indonesia, Wallace had a sudden insight about natural selection - the same idea Darwin had been developing for 20 years!
In 1858, Wallace wrote to Darwin explaining his theory. Darwin was shocked - Wallace had independently discovered the same mechanism! Rather than fighting over who thought of it first, their papers were presented together at the Linnean Society in London. In 1859, Darwin published "On the Origin of Species," which became one of the most influential books ever written.
Darwin and Wallace show us how good science works:
On the Galápagos Islands, Darwin found 13 species of finches (now called "Darwin's finches"). Each species had a different beak shape: large, strong beaks for cracking seeds; long, thin beaks for catching insects; sharp beaks for eating cacti. Darwin realised these finches had all evolved from a common ancestor - their beaks had adapted to different food sources on different islands. This was key evidence for natural selection!
While exploring Indonesia, Wallace noticed something strange: animals on some islands were completely different from animals on nearby islands! He drew an imaginary line (now called the "Wallace Line") separating Asian animals (tigers, elephants) from Australian-type animals (marsupials). Wallace realised this was because the islands had been separated for millions of years, allowing animals to evolve differently.
Darwin lived at Down House in Kent for 40 years, where he conducted experiments and wrote his famous books. You can still visit Down House today! In his gardens, Darwin studied earthworms, orchids, and pigeons to test his ideas about evolution. He even had a "Sandwalk" - a path he walked every day while thinking about his theories. The house is now a museum run by English Heritage.
The Natural History Museum in London has a special Darwin Centre where you can learn about Darwin and Wallace's work. The museum holds millions of specimens, including many collected by Darwin and Wallace themselves! You can see original Galápagos finches, fossils Darwin found in South America, and letters between the two scientists. The iconic statue of Darwin sits in the main hall.
