An adaptation is a special feature or behaviour that helps an organism survive in its habitat. Over many generations, organisms that have helpful features are more likely to survive and pass these on to their offspring.

There are three main types: Structural (body parts like thick fur or sharp claws), Behavioural (actions like migration or hibernation), and Functional (body processes like producing venom or storing water).

Different habitats have different challenges. Cold places need warmth adaptations. Dry places need water-saving adaptations. Each organism has features that match its habitat's conditions.

By comparing similar animals in different habitats, we can see how adaptations work. For example, Arctic foxes have small ears (to keep warm) while desert foxes have large ears (to lose heat).

An adaptation is any feature of an organism that helps it survive and reproduce in its environment. Adaptations develop over many generations through natural selection - organisms with helpful features survive better and have more offspring.
Every habitat has challenges that organisms must overcome:
Hedgehogs have multiple adaptations: spines (structural) protect them from predators by curling into a ball. They hibernate (behavioural) through winter when food is scarce. Their excellent sense of smell (functional) helps them find slugs and insects in the dark.
The Arctic fox has tiny ears, a round body, and thick white fur to stay warm and hide in snow. The Fennec fox (desert) has huge ears to release heat, sandy-coloured fur for desert camouflage, and fur on its feet to walk on hot sand. Same animal family, opposite adaptations!
Water lilies have flat, waxy leaves that float on the surface to catch sunlight. Their stems are flexible to move with water currents. Stomata (breathing holes) are on the top of leaves, not underneath like land plants, because the bottom is underwater.
Swifts spend almost their entire lives flying - they eat, sleep, and even mate in the air! Their adaptations include: long, curved wings for speed, tiny feet (they rarely land), wide mouths to catch insects mid-flight, and they migrate to Africa in winter when British insects are scarce.

Wrong thinking: "The fox grew big ears because it wanted to cool down." Correct: Adaptations happen over many generations. Foxes born with slightly larger ears survived better in the desert, so they had more offspring with large ears. Individual animals cannot change their own adaptations.
Wrong thinking: "When you go to a hot country, you adapt to the heat." Correct: Getting used to heat is acclimatisation (temporary adjustment). True adaptation takes many generations and involves changes that are inherited.
Wrong thinking: "Everything about an animal is perfectly adapted." Correct: Not every feature is an adaptation. Some features are leftover from ancestors (like the human appendix) or have no survival advantage.
Wrong thinking: "Adaptations are only for deserts and Arctic." Correct: All organisms have adaptations for their habitat, including garden birds, woodland plants, and pond animals. A robin's red breast for territory display is just as much an adaptation as a polar bear's white fur.
