Use the pathway to build a clear mental model. Open each node and answer the check question.
Choose what you want to classify (leaves, minibeasts, seeds, shells). Decide on a question: "How can I identify these organisms using observable features?" Gather at least 6-8 different specimens.
Check: What would be a good group of organisms to classify from your local area?
Carefully observe each specimen. Record observable features: size, shape, colour, texture, number of parts. Look for features that are different between specimens - these will be useful for your key.
Check: Why should you focus on features that are different between organisms?
Find a feature that splits your organisms into two groups. For each group, find another feature to split them further. Continue until each organism has its own endpoint. Make sure every question has only two possible answers.
Check: What type of questions work best in a classification key?
Ask someone else to use your key. Can they correctly identify all the organisms? If not, improve your questions. Good keys are clear, use observable features, and work every time.

A classification investigation involves using your observation and classification skills to identify and group organisms. You'll collect specimens, observe their features, and create your own identification key that others can use.
Choose organisms that:
Good choices: Fallen leaves, seeds, shells, photos of garden birds, pressed flowers, pictures of British mammals.
For each specimen, record:
Specimens: Oak, beech, sycamore, ash, horse chestnut, holly, hawthorn, birch leaves. Key questions: "Is the leaf made of one piece (simple) or several leaflets (compound)?" → Simple → "Are the edges smooth or serrated?" → Serrated → "Is the leaf lobed (wavy edges)?" This creates a working key that anyone can use to identify British tree leaves.
Specimens: Mussel, cockle, razor clam, whelk, periwinkle, limpet, scallop, oyster. Key questions: "Is it a spiral shape?" → Yes = snail type (whelk, periwinkle). No → "Does it have two matching halves?" → Yes = bivalve (mussel, cockle, scallop). No → "Is it cone-shaped?" → Yes = limpet. Continue until all are identified.
Specimens: Woodlouse, spider, ladybird, ant, worm, slug, snail, centipede. Key questions: "Does it have legs?" → No → "Does it have a shell?" → Yes = snail, No = slug/worm. Yes → "How many legs?" → 6 = insect, 8 = spider, more than 8 = centipede/woodlouse. This demonstrates how to use number of body parts in classification.
Specimens: Robin, blue tit, blackbird, magpie, sparrow, woodpigeon, starling, goldfinch. Key questions: "Is the bird larger than your hand?" → Yes (pigeon, magpie, blackbird) or No (robin, blue tit, sparrow, goldfinch). "Does it have a red breast?" → Yes = robin. "Is it black and white?" → Yes = magpie. Photo keys are great for animals that can't be collected!

Wrong approach: "Does it make a web?" (you might not see the web). Correct approach: Use features you can observe directly on the specimen. "Does it have 8 legs?" works better because you can always count legs.
Wrong approach: "What colour is it?" (could be many colours). Correct approach: Use yes/no questions: "Is it mostly green?" Then "Is it mostly brown?" Keep each question to exactly two possible answers.
Wrong approach: Starting with "Does it have a head?" when all your specimens have heads. Correct approach: Start with features that actually divide your specimens into two groups. Look at what makes them different, not what they have in common.
Wrong approach: Assuming your key works because you made it. Correct approach: Give your key to someone else who hasn't seen it before. Can they correctly identify all specimens? If they get confused or make mistakes, your questions need to be clearer.
Collect 8 different fallen leaves from trees near your home or school. Record their features (shape, edges, size, colour) and create your own classification key. Test it with a friend or family member - can they identify all 8 leaves using your key?
