Accuracy means how close your measurement is to the true value. If a pencil is exactly 15cm long and you measure it as 15cm, your measurement is accurate. If you measured it as 12cm, that would be inaccurate. Using the right equipment and technique helps you get accurate measurements.

Precision means how detailed your measurement is, or how consistent your repeated measurements are. Measuring "about 15cm" is less precise than "15.3cm". If you measure something three times and get 15cm, 15cm, 15cm - that's precise! But if you get 12cm, 18cm, 14cm - that's imprecise.

Taking the same measurement multiple times (at least 3) helps you spot mistakes and get more reliable results. You can identify anomalies (unusual results that don't fit) and calculate a mean average for a more trustworthy answer. One measurement might be wrong - three measurements show you the pattern!
Check: What would you do if one measurement was very different from the others?
To read scales accurately: put your eyes level with the scale (avoid parallax error), read from the correct side, count the divisions to work out what each mark represents, and estimate between the smallest marks. Always include the correct units (cm, ml, g, °C, seconds).
Check: If a ruler has marks at 0, 5, and 10, what does each small line represent?
In science, your conclusions are only as good as your measurements. If you measure incorrectly, your results will be wrong, and any conclusions you draw will be unreliable. Imagine a baker who measures flour inaccurately - the cake won't turn out right! Scientists face the same challenge on a bigger scale.

Key insight: You can be precise but inaccurate! If your ruler starts at 1cm instead of 0, all your precise measurements will be consistently wrong.
To find the mean: add all your measurements together, then divide by how many measurements you took.
Example: Three measurements of bounce height: 45cm, 48cm, 42cm
Mean = (45 + 48 + 42) ÷ 3 = 135 ÷ 3 = 45cm
An anomaly is a result that doesn't fit the pattern. If your three measurements are 45cm, 47cm, and 12cm, that 12cm is clearly anomalous - something went wrong! You should note it, try to explain why it happened, and consider excluding it from your average (but always mention you did this and why).
Accurate measurements are essential in the real world. Doctors must measure medicine doses precisely. Engineers must measure components accurately or bridges could collapse. Even chefs rely on accurate measurements for consistent recipes. In science, inaccurate measurements lead to wrong conclusions - which could waste time, money, and even endanger lives!
Task: Measure exactly 50ml of water for an experiment.
Accurate technique:

Results: 58cm, 61cm, 59cm, 15cm, 60cm
Analysis:
Note: Always record why you excluded data: "The 15cm reading was excluded as the ball hit the table leg."
Problem: A thermometer shows marks at 20°C and 30°C with 5 small lines between them. What temperature does each small line represent?
Solution:
So if the liquid is at the second mark above 20°C, the temperature is 20 + (2 × 2) = 24°C
Why accuracy matters in healthcare:
When a doctor prescribes 5ml of medicine for a child, the pharmacist must measure it accurately. If they gave 15ml by mistake, the child could be seriously harmed. If they gave 1ml, the medicine wouldn't work.

Getting the same answer repeatedly shows precision. Accuracy is about being close to the real value!

✓ Right: "The temperature was 25°C."
Without units, measurements are meaningless! Is 25 degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit? Centimetres or millimetres? Always include units.

✓ Right: Crouching down so your eyes are level with the meniscus (liquid surface).
Reading from the wrong angle makes liquids appear higher or lower than they really are. Always read at eye level!
✗ Wrong: "I measured it once and got 12cm, so the answer is 12cm."
✓ Right: "I measured three times (12cm, 13cm, 12cm) and calculated the mean: (12+13+12)÷3 = 12.3cm."
A single measurement could be wrong. Three measurements let you spot anomalies and calculate a reliable average.
