Shadows form because light travels in straight lines and cannot bend around objects. When light from a source hits an opaque object (one that doesn't let light through), the light is blocked. The area behind the object where no light reaches is called a shadow. No light = darkness = shadow!

To form a shadow, you need three things: (1) a light source to produce light, (2) an opaque object to block the light, and (3) a surface (like the ground or a wall) for the shadow to fall on. If any of these is missing, there won't be a visible shadow. Transparent objects don't create shadows because light passes straight through them.

A shadow has the same outline shape as the object creating it because light travels in straight lines. If you hold up a circle, the shadow will be circular. If you hold up a hand, the shadow will be hand-shaped. The shadow is like a 2D silhouette of the 3D object - it shows the outline but not the details or colours.

With a small, point-like light source, shadows have sharp edges. But with larger light sources (like the Sun), shadows have two parts: the umbra (the darkest central part where no light reaches) and the penumbra (the lighter outer edge where some light reaches). This is why your shadow on a sunny day often has fuzzy edges.

Understanding shadows helps explain eclipses, sundials, and why we can tell the time by the Sun's position. Shadows are used in art, photography, and architecture. Scientists use shadow analysis to determine the height of objects and even to study planets and moons in our solar system!
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth. The Moon is opaque, so it blocks sunlight from reaching parts of Earth. The UK experienced a significant partial eclipse in March 2015, where the Moon blocked up to 97% of the Sun in northern Scotland. The darkest part of the Moon's shadow (the umbra) creates a total eclipse, while the outer penumbra creates a partial eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from the UK will be in 2090 - people in Cornwall might see it! This demonstrates shadow formation on a massive, cosmic scale.
Shadow puppetry is an ancient art form, and the British Museum in London has a wonderful collection of shadow puppets from Indonesia, China, and Turkey. Shadow puppets work because opaque leather or card figures are held between a light source and a translucent screen. The light cannot pass through the puppets, so their shapes appear as shadows on the screen. The puppeteer moves the figures to tell stories, creating detailed shadow silhouettes. Modern shadow puppet shows still tour UK schools and theatres, teaching children about light and shadows through performance!
Britain has hundreds of historic sundials, with famous examples at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and Queen's College, Cambridge. A sundial uses the shadow cast by a gnomon (a triangular piece that sticks up) to tell the time. As the Sun moves across the sky during the day, the position of the shadow changes. The gnomon is opaque, so it blocks sunlight and creates a shadow on the dial plate. The shadow always points in the same direction at the same time each day (on any given date), allowing us to read the time. Sundials were Britain's main timekeeping method before clocks became common!
You may have heard of Groundhog Day in America, where people traditionally believe a groundhog seeing its shadow means six more weeks of winter. Britain has a similar tradition with hedgehogs! The science behind this folklore is simple: on a sunny day, any opaque animal creates a shadow. If it's sunny on 2nd February, there's a shadow. If it's cloudy, there's no direct sunlight and therefore no clear shadow. While the weather prediction isn't scientifically accurate, it perfectly demonstrates the basic principle: you need a light source (the Sun) and an opaque object (the animal) to form a shadow. No sun = no shadow!

Wrong: "A shadow is a dark area, so you can only see shadows in the dark."
Right: Shadows require a light source to form! A shadow is the absence of light in a specific area (behind an opaque object), but you need light everywhere else to see the shadow. In complete darkness, there's no light to block, so there are no shadows - just darkness everywhere. You need light to see shadows.
Wrong: "Frosted glass is transparent because some light goes through it."
Right: Transparent materials let light pass through clearly (you can see objects through them) - like clear glass or water. Translucent materials let some light through but scatter it so you can't see clearly through them - like frosted glass, tissue paper, or thin fabric. Opaque materials block all light. The distinction matters because transparent objects cast almost no shadow, translucent objects cast faint shadows, and opaque objects cast dark shadows.
Wrong: "A red ball will create a red shadow."
Right: Shadows are always dark (black or grey) regardless of the colour of the object! This is because a shadow is simply an area where light has been blocked - there is no light there to give it colour. The colour of an object affects the light that bounces OFF it (which is how we see the object's colour), but the shadow behind it is just an absence of light, which always appears dark.
Wrong: "An opaque object will always create a shadow."
Right: You need THREE things for a shadow: (1) a light source, (2) an opaque object, AND (3) a surface for the shadow to appear on. An opaque object floating in space, far from any light source, wouldn't create a visible shadow. And even with light and an object, if there's no surface nearby, you won't see the shadow (though it would appear on any surface you placed there).
