Light is a form of energy that travels from a source (like the Sun or a lamp) outwards in all directions. We represent the path of light using straight lines with arrows, called light rays. The arrow shows the direction the light is travelling.

We can prove light travels in straight lines through simple experiments. If you shine a torch through a series of cards with holes, the light only passes through when all the holes are perfectly aligned in a straight line. Shadows also prove this - they have sharp edges because light cannot bend around objects.

Because light cannot bend around objects, when light hits an opaque (non-transparent) object, the light is blocked. This creates a dark area behind the object called a shadow. The shadow has the same shape as the object because light rays travel in straight lines from the source.

Understanding that light travels in straight lines helps us explain many things: why we cannot see around corners, how sundials work to tell the time, why eclipses happen, and how laser beams work. This principle is used in torches, car headlights, and theatre spotlights.

At concerts and events across the UK (like those at the O2 Arena or Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations), you can see spectacular laser light displays. The laser beams appear as perfectly straight lines cutting through the air. This happens because light - including laser light - always travels in straight lines. The beams are only visible because tiny particles of smoke or fog scatter some of the light towards your eyes. Without the fog, you would only see the spot where the laser hits!
Britain has many historic sundials, including famous ones at Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London. Sundials work because sunlight travels in straight lines from the Sun to Earth. The gnomon (the raised part that casts the shadow) blocks the sunlight in a straight line, creating a shadow that points to the current time. As the Sun moves across the sky during the day, the shadow moves too - but always in straight lines. Without the principle of straight-line light travel, sundials simply wouldn't work!
When driving at night on UK roads, car headlights illuminate the road ahead in a straight beam. The headlight contains a reflector that directs light rays forward in straight lines. This is why you can only see what's directly in front of the car - the light cannot bend around corners! On winding country lanes in places like the Lake District or the Scottish Highlands, drivers must be extra careful because their headlights only illuminate straight ahead. Dipped headlights angle the beams down to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers.
London's West End is famous for its spectacular theatre productions. Stage lighting technicians use the principle that light travels in straight lines to create dramatic effects. Spotlights create clear, defined beams that highlight specific actors on stage. If light could bend and curve, it would be impossible to focus on just one performer! The lighting rigs high above the stage are carefully positioned so the straight beams of light hit exactly the right spots. You can often see these straight beams cutting through theatrical haze.

Right: Light always travels in straight lines and cannot bend around corners or obstacles. This is why we cannot see around corners without a mirror. Sound can travel around corners because sound waves behave differently from light rays. If light could bend, we wouldn't have shadows!
Wrong: "The Moon is a light source because it gives off light."
Right: A light source produces its own light (like the Sun, a candle, or a light bulb). The Moon is NOT a light source - it only reflects light from the Sun. We can see the Moon because sunlight travels in straight lines to the Moon, bounces off it, then travels in straight lines to our eyes. This is an important distinction!
Wrong: Drawing light rays as simple straight lines without arrows.
Right: Light ray diagrams must always include arrows to show the direction the light is travelling. The arrow points away from the light source, showing that light travels FROM the source TO other objects. Without arrows, your diagram doesn't properly show how light travels.
Wrong: "We see objects because light travels from our eyes to the object."
Right: Light travels TO our eyes, not FROM them. Light travels in straight lines from a light source, bounces off objects, then travels in straight lines into our eyes. Our eyes detect light - they don't produce it! Ancient Greeks used to believe eyes sent out "seeing rays", but we now know this is incorrect.
