The left ventricle has much thicker muscular walls than the right ventricle. This is because it needs to generate enough pressure to pump blood all the way around the body. The right ventricle only needs to pump blood to the nearby lungs.
Understanding heart structure helps doctors diagnose heart problems. For example, heart murmurs can indicate faulty valves, and heart attacks occur when the heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen. Knowing how a healthy heart works helps us understand what goes wrong in heart disease.
When a doctor uses a stethoscope, they're listening to the "lub-dub" sounds of your heart valves closing. The "lub" is the valves between atria and ventricles closing, and the "dub" is the valves at the exits to the arteries closing. If there's an unusual whooshing sound, it might indicate a faulty valve - this is called a heart murmur.
Many schools dissect pig or lamb hearts (which are similar to human hearts). You can see the thick muscular walls, identify the four chambers, and find the valves. The left ventricle wall is noticeably thicker than the right - you can measure and compare them.
Surgeons at NHS hospitals can replace damaged heart valves with artificial ones, repair holes in the septum, or even perform heart transplants. In 2023, over 200 heart transplants were performed in the UK. Understanding heart structure is essential for these life-saving operations.
In 1628, English physician William Harvey published his discovery that blood circulates around the body, pumped by the heart. Before this, people believed blood was constantly made and consumed. Harvey worked out that the heart pumps about 260 litres per hour - far too much to be constantly remade!

Remember: Atria are Above (at the top), and Ventricles are below (at the bottom). Atria receive blood; ventricles pump blood out. The ventricles have thicker walls because they need more muscle power to push blood out.
In diagrams, the heart is usually shown as if you're looking at someone facing you - so the left side appears on the right of the picture. The left side handles oxygenated blood (bright red), and the right side handles deoxygenated blood (darker red).
The pulmonary artery is an exception - it carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. Similarly, the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood back from the lungs. Arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart; veins carry blood TO the heart.
Students often remember that the left ventricle is thicker but forget why. It's because it needs to pump blood around the entire body (a long distance), whereas the right ventricle only pumps blood to the nearby lungs. More muscle = more pumping power.
