A classification key (also called an identification key or dichotomous key) is a series of questions that help you identify an unknown organism. Each question has exactly two possible answers (yes/no, or two choices), and each answer leads you to the next step until you identify the organism.
A reliable key should:
To identify a minibeast: "Does it have legs?" → Yes → "How many legs?" → 6 legs = insect, 8 legs = spider, more than 8 = centipede/millipede. No legs → "Does it have a shell?" → Yes = snail, No = worm or slug.
"Is the leaf simple or compound?" → Simple → "Is the edge smooth or serrated (jagged)?" → Smooth = beech, Serrated = oak. Compound → "Are leaflets arranged in pairs?" → Yes = ash, No = horse chestnut.
"Does it have a shell?" → Yes = pond snail. No → "Does it have legs?" → Yes → "How many?" → 6 = water beetle, more than 6 = water shrimp. No legs → "Is it worm-shaped?" → Yes = leech, No = tadpole.
